The ACT government is the third State/Territory government to introduce a ban on lightweight, single-use plastic bags, following the lead of South Australia (2009) and the Northern Territory (1 September 2011).
From today, single-use, lightweight polyethylene plastic bags (35 microns or less) cannot be provided by retailers for carrying goods. Shoppers are encouraged to bring or purchase their own reusable bags.
"By banning lightweight plastic shopping bags, we can reduce unnecessary consumption, reduce waste sent to landfill, and reduce litter and other environmental impacts of plastic bags," said ACT Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell.
